LoRes Weathered Hawker Typhoon Mk1b "RAF 175th.Sqdn.121Wing" for Emil's ETO 9th.USAAF.& 2nd.TAF Campaign

This LoRes Weathered skin is of the RAF 175th.Sqdn. Typhoon Mk1b."HH-C" late production (circa: August 1944) with the slide back bubble canopy. This Typhoon Rocket Projectile Squadron was the second of three units that formed the 121 RAF Wing of the 2nd.TAF

By August of 1944, the Invasion Strips had already been removed from the top surfaces of this Typhoon for it's continued service over the European continent. This was done to make the Typhoon less conspicuous from above while flying low over the French countryside while still being very recognizable from below.

The 175th. Squadron's motto was "Stop At Nothing".

Formed on 3 March 1942 at Warmwell, it took over the Hurricane IIBs left behind by the departing No 402 Squadron. Operations began the following month with an attack on an enemy airfield. The squadron also undertook coastal patrols and shipping strikes but in July 1942 it was warned that it was to proceed overseas, however, this instruction was cancelled and the unit returned to its previous duties.

Typhoons arrived in April 1943 and it was with these that it operated for the remainder of the war. On 12 June 1943 the squadron joined the newly formed 2nd Tactical Air Force and the same day began operations with its new aircraft with an attack on Abbeville airfield.

The squadron joined No 121 Airfield (Wing) and in February 1944 began training in the use of rocket projectiles, although operations continued at a reduced rate. RP attacks began in April and the squadron now concentrated on this type of attack during the build up to Operation Overlord. Following the Allied landings in June, 175 moved to France to operate from forward airfields in support of the Allied advance, however, the ground conditions were such that the aircraft suffered severe problems with their engines and these had to be regularly returned to Britain for replacement until July when the squadron had moved to more suitable landing grounds.
The squadron continued with its armed reconnaissance operations against rail and armoured target for the remainder of the war and remained in Germany until disbanding at Schleswig-Holstein on 29 September 1945.

I developed this project from a base skin/model provided in Emil's TAF Skin Pack. I used a variety of rendering technics to change the squadron Codes, add more detail and enhance this aircraft's operational weathering look.
This skin "HH-C" was an actual member of the RAF 174th.Squadron however the pilot is unknown....

The aircraft's colour scheme and Squadron markings where derived from a coloured aircraft profile plate found in the 1999 Osprey Aircraft of The Aces #27 Publication "Typhoon and Tempest Aces of World War 2" series by Chris Thomas. All operational reference material came also from the "Air of Authority - A History of RAF Organisation Website".... http://www.rafweb.org/Menu.htm

The base skin was taken from Emil's ETO 9th.USAAF/2nd.TAF Campaign so the original creator of this skin is unknown. Included with this is Migge's excellent 'Typhoon Virtual Cockpit' with the 'Wing View' modified by your's truly. RAF Mark2 Gunsight by PapaRomeo for period authenticity...

Special thanks to Shawn Griffin for his excellent LoRes Batch File Converter Utility...

The download includes all *.tpc, *.3dz and *.pcx files. The latter begin included so you can review how the graphic weathering techniques were done....
To install simple copy all the *.tpc and *.3dz files into your EAW main directory or as required by 'Stab' or 'Skins & More'....

Enjoy and watch your six .... Skylark
